The PES Institution
wanted a new library and auditorium building with a grand physical presence in their
45 acre campus with an existing hospital and medical college. The new 1,20,000
sqft building was positioned to be equidistant from the college and hospital
and connected through glass bridges for easy accessibility. The building is covered
almost entirely with glass, providing transparency for the functions inside and
reinforcing the notion that knowledge and ideas must be shared.
The two-floored 40,000
sqft medical library was defined as an institution that is not only dedicated
to books, but as an information store where all potent forms of media—new and
old—are presented equally. In an age where information can be accessed
anywhere, the library becomes more than a place of storage but a place of
lea
ing. Spaces have been created where students can sit in small cozy clusters
in a closed environment or in cantilevered reading rooms giving the students a
panaromic view of the campus and hills in the background through the
transparent glass. The library also includes conference rooms of varied sizes facilitating
audio-visual presentations. A section of the reading rooms are open 24 hours and
is attached to a cafeteria.
The 600 seat auditorium
on the ground floor takes the natural profile of the land. The light shade of
wood in the interior wall panelling complements the blue and orange auditorium
chairs and acoustic fabric reflecting colours in the university logo. The
auditorium spills out into a central spline which is designed to be a hub for
college gatherings. The semi-covered open space is ado
ed with trees and informal
seating and leads to an open theatre.
