The house was designed for a couple who wanted the landscaping to be the integral part of the living space. The property was located on a busy residential area in Bangalore, so it was also important to insulate the living space from the dust and noise of the chaotic traffic.
The courtyard concept with a garden at the center of the house was an ideal and viable alte
ative. The architectural expression of the Courtyard House is a private enclosed area surrounded by walls and open to the sky. All the rooms are designed around the courtyard with a simple lawn and few exotic trees. Blurring the border between inside and outside, the house offers a tropical lifestyle that coexists with nature. Apart from providing privacy for the family, an arena for outdoor entertainment and a safe place for children to play, the area also adds a lot of air and light into the house.
The use of an oversized beam across the center of the courtyard which slopes inwards adding freshness to the composition. The simple palette of materials and colour used across the interior of the house does not draw attention from the relation between the rooms and courtyard. Local and natural materials are utilized to reduce cost. The exte
al walls are made of in-situ concrete with bamboo form work, while locally-sourced bricks are exposed on the inte
al walls as finishing. A ventilated cavity separates the concrete and brick walls to protect interior space from heat transfer.
